Telstra agreement signals the end of PSTN landlines.
Telstra has signed an agreement with the Australian government that will lead to its copper cable plant being closed down and all of its customers handed over to the National Broadband Network. Telstra will transfer customers from its copper and hybrid fibre cable networks to the new IP based network and the telephone landlines that we've known and trusted for decades will be gone for good. This has some serious implications for monitored security alarm systems that rely upon landlines to transmit their messages to an Alarm Monitoring Centre.
2G GSM/GPRS Network Closure.
Just to add to the confusion, its not only telephone landlines that are being phased out. Consumers worldwide are hungry for bandwidth and the 2G GSM/GPRS network is scheduled to be closed down within 5-7 years. When you are researching options for upgrading your security system, GPRS based equipment may not provide you wth the future-proof solution you are looking for. If you prefer a wireless solution and the pending 2G/GPRS network closure is a concern, you may want to consider a 3G based solution which will have a much longer lifespan.
